51) To request the RI Board, to consider researching new categories of membership
- this proposal, from the Netherlands, would add "Non-Rotarian friends of
Rotary" as a new classification for membership. |
First, the proposed classification seems self-contradictory.
Second, if they are truly friends of Rotary, then let's induct them in their
proper classification. |

52) To amend the provisions for qualification for membership
- proposal from Argentina would qualify, in the Constitution, the qualities
of a good prospective Rotarian. |
I don't see anything new here, just that we would be adding
it to the Constitution and making ourselves less able to change in the
future. |
|
 |
53) To preclude clubs from limiting membership based on sexual orientation
- this proposal from two clubs and two districts in the USA would add
"sexual orientation" to the list of criteria for which membership could not
be withheld. |
What ever happened to "don't ask, don't tell" ?? |
|
 |
54) To request the RI Board to consider emphasizing the qualifications for
membership - this proposal from Japan seeks to terminate from membership all
persons who lack discretionary authority in their jobs. |
Each club can set its own standards. I don't think we
need a world-wide edict. |
|
 |
55) To amend the provisions for qualification for membership
- this proposal from Sweden seeks the exact opposite as #54 above. It
would embrace all Rotarians who are good representatives of their business
or profession regardless of discretionary authority. |
This amendment gives clubs more flexibility to set their own
goals and standards. |
|
 |
56) To allow individuals who interrupted their professional activity to care for
their children to be active members - this would apply the same standards to
such people as are applied to retired persons.
|

 |
57) To allow Rotary Foundation alumni to be active members -
Actually, Rotary Foundation alumni can already be Rotarians. This
would eliminate the other requirements if they are Foundation alumni. |
The vast majority of Foundation alumni don't need this help.
Let's just make them Rotarians in the normal way. |
|
 |
| 58) To amend the classification limitation - this proposal
from two clubs in New York, can only be used by professional competitors to
exclude potential Rotarians from membership. |
What an incredibly bad idea! The whole purpose of the
classification system is to insure diversity. It was never meant to
exclude good people from Rotary. |

64) To provide that when a terminated member applies to a new club the reasons
for termination shall be considered |
This seems like a good idea. |
|
 |
65) To amend the provisions for terminating a member |
This only requires that the Board consider the Four-Way-Test
when voting to terminate a member for cause. |
|
 |
66) To amend the provisions for termination of membership -
This proposal, from Russia and Sweden, would completely rewrite the rules
for termination. |
This is overly complicated and apparently accomplishes
nothing. |
|
 |
67) To request the RI Board to consider creating a computer database that lists
the name of all terminated Rotarians and the reasons for termination |
The administrative burden, and possible legal liability of
maintaining such a data base make this proposal impractical to say the
least. |
